In the Grim Darkness of the Far Future There's Only...

...Terraced Landscaping!

The first two, with a Space Marine to show scale.

They turned out so well, I made two more. Easy!

I found a pile of 1/2" Styrofoam sheets behind the local Rite-Aid, and snatched it up. I used my band saw to cut the sheet into these shapes, with a 45 degree bevel, glued them together, painted, and flocked.  I may paint the rock-surface as I prefer a darker look than this bright tan, but otherwise couldn't be more pleased.  The effort-to-reward ratio with these hills couldn't be better.

Update: Decided to paint the surface of the hills. I'm glad I did. They'll need more touch-up now (easy drybrushing) but a layer of black tempura makes them look much more war-torn. Also hides several of my mistakes.

Much better.

Generations

My new shiny Warhammer 40k book arrived today. Oh, happy day!

I like how it compares with the original Rogue Trader book.  It is, of course, much larger (yet strangely, contains fewer actual rules.)

I <heart> Jon Blanche. Click on this to see the full-sized photo. It's cool.

Rock and Roll

These are just painted foam, but they turned out great and I'm proud of them.  Five terrain-type rock impassible terrain obstacles, and six objective sized rocks, of assorted colors.

Army of Darkness

Alex is ready for action tomorrow with his 1500 point Necron army.

Army of Darkness!

1500 Points of Light

Tomorrow's 40k tournament is certain to be the last 5th edition tournament. Heck, it might be my last 5th edition game, ever.

I decided to go with a horde of humanity. 1500 Points of IG, no battle tanks.

That's the entire army.  1500 points of flashlights (of assorted power levels.)

I can't wait to feed these guys to whatever meat grinder awaits them.

I think I'll keep an unofficial body count for each of my three games.  We'll see what opponent is the best at just taking out guardsmen.

This is my list:

Leman Russ Eradicator HF3

That's Leman Russ Eradicator with heavy flamers x3.  Finished tonight.

Here's the new Leman Russ, armed with a Nova Cannon, hull mounted Heavy Flamer, and Heavy Flamer side sponsons.

Tank commander! Pask is sort of pointless with a bunch of Flamers, but I suppose we could say it's Pask's less known brother, Commander Jethro Pask.

Side view.

Rear 3/4 view.

All the Russ'

All the armor, plus some Sentinels.

With all this armor, it's sort of a shame I plan on using almost none of it for this weekend's 40k tournament. Instead, I'm going with a horde of guardsmen.  This is my list:

Company Command Squad
Commander
Veteran x2
Veteran Weapon Team x1
Chimera
Primaris Psyker
Ogryn Sqyad (x4)
Ogryn Bone 'ead
Ratling Sniper Squad (x5)
Veteran Squad x9 (desert)

The Worst Leman Russ (WIP)

I bought a Nova Cannon off of Ebay because it looked cool. I had no idea what it did (how bad could it be?) I'm pretty sure it's the worst turret weapon you can get for a Leman Russ tank.  Strength 6, ignores cover.

What else ignores cover? Flamers.

Let's do this thing.

Three Heavy Flamers and a Nova cannon. Assault this thing, I dare you.
The paint looks better than this photo shows, and is obviously unfinished.

Honestly, I think it's a terrible configuration, but I've already got three Russ' so I decided I do something different with this 4th one.  Who knows, maybe it'll be more effective than I anticipate. I still think the Nova Cannon is cool looking.

Note: This is the old Leman Russ model, so magnetizing the weapons wasn't a realistic option. I had to chop the lascannon and sponson bolters off with an Xacto knife to fit the flamers on, and there wasn't enough left of the original weapons to save them. I may yet purchase other weapons for the hull and sponsons, pop off the flamers, and magnetize for a more flexible tank. Not sure it's worth it, but who knows.

Necrons vs Mentor (spoiler alert: Necrons win!)

It's father's day weekend so I can do what I want.  It doesn't hurt that playing 40k is what I want and Alex is always down for a game.  I was eager to play with my new Command Squad and they did not disappoint.

I learned:

  • Apothecaries are very cool units.
  • There is nothing bad about your Standard Bearer having a power fist
  • Lots of power weapons will kill Lychguard, even if they won't stay dead.

A battle report is way too much trouble.  We played capture and control with pitched battle set up and we both kept control of our objectives at the end of the game. We used units and characters eliminated as a tie-breaker. He defeated me my one 'point'.  It wouldn't have been close but I finished off both his Destroyers and his Wraiths on my last turn (the last half of the last turn!)

Here's some photos:

The game is ready to start.  Alex set up first, so he's starting.

There's the new Command Squad. As my newest unit, they were doomed from the start.

There's Brother August, my only Mentor Dreadnaught.

There's my two Tac Squads. Squad 1 is in the Rhino, 10 strong. Squad 5 was split into combat squads. Half guarding the objective (the yellow blob to the right of the building) and the other half joined with my Librarian would Gate of Infinity across the board to try and take the opponent's objective.

There's the Predator (all Lascannons all the time, thank you) and the two Land Speeders.

Alex has a wide assortment of Necrons.  Damn those Wraiths are creepy. We gotta get them painted, though.

The Wraiths stormed across the battlefield.  My land speeder's multi-melta took one out, but the remaining two took revenge on both speeders with relative ease.

I kept killing his Destroyers and they kept coming back to life! Grrrr!

That yellow blob was Alex's objective. I never rooted the Immortals out, so he kept it at the end.

Captain!

Techmarine with four Servitors. Not only did the Techmarine successfully repair my Dreadnaught's Assault Cannon, but tied up Alex's Wraiths for the entire game, eventually killing them.

Tac squad attack! (Except for the five in the foreground. Their job was to defend.)

The Techmarine fixing the dread's broken assault cannot.

This is just after the speeders killed a wraith, and just before the remaining wraiths took out the speeders.

Necrons advancing through the center of the battlefield.  Imotek the Stormlord with his Lychguard.

My Command Squad was built for assault, so they too advanced towards the middle of the field to meet Imotek.

Alex's new spider. Not much impact this battle.

There's Illuminor Szeras and his beefed up Immortals sitting on the objective (Alex rolled +1 strength for them. Meh.)

My Librarian and some marines about to climb up and take that objective (they didn't.)

It was a great game, with Alex winning by the slightest of margins.  If we followed the rules strictly, the game would have been a tie, but we hate ties.  With both objectives secured by each of us, Alex took out my Captain, the Command Squad, and Land Speeder squadron. I only managed to kill off the Lychguard and the Destroyers.  That gave Alex the advantage and the game.

Oh, Captain, My Captain!

Not only did I finish my Mentor Captain's new backpack and banner (which I don't love, but it's quite literally the best I can do) but I also managed to fully paint my Standard Bearer in a single evening, which is pretty good for me.  Pulled him out of his Simple Green dip at about 6pm and was hitting the finished mini with clear-coat at about 11pm.

Command Squad Complete!

The entire command squad, complete with banners and such!

MEDIC!!!!

Are you not inspired?

Nobody takes his banner away unless he wants them to.

I wish I could paint banners better. *sigh*

Warriors three.

Take Command

My Mentor Space Marine Apothecary is one of my favorite minis. The paint job, while a not my best from a technical standpoint, came together so well I just love it.  One of my disappointments with the 5th edition Space Marine army list was the Apothecary's relegation to the Command Squad, something I just didn't have.

Until now.

The Command Squad.

Storm bolters,  power swords, fancy backpacks, and MkVIII armor

That Space Marine Medic I like so much.

Oh, Captain, my Captain (WIP)

There's his new fancy backpack with banner (WIP)

From the back.

I know what you're thinking. There's only four Marines in this so-called Command Squad, and you'd be right to think that.  The fifth and final member is my standard bearer.  He's soaking in Simple Green right now, getting ready for a full redo.  He's holding his standard with a Power fist and I'm sorely tempted to outfit him with a second one.  Cooler heads will prevail and I'll probably give him a bolter. All those power swords cost enough points as-is.
