As you can see, I haven't settled on a particular style of hill. This is due to a 50/50 split of trying to explore different techniques and not being able to make the same thing twice.

Mostly 3d printed buildings atop foam hill/cliff terrain.

You can't buy an army without breaking the bank.  Is that how it goes? Well, I have a fair number of extras so before I go crazy buying new(ish) minis, I figure I ought to pad the 'ol PayPal account.

Among the treasures for sale, some very old school Space Marines.

Necrons, old school of course.

I love metal minis.  I'm sure it's because I grew up with them, and the look and feel and weight all seem more 'right' than with any other common material.  I have grudgingly accepted plastic as the material used by GW. If metal isn't an option, plastic is certainly a better choice than resin, which was just always awful.

8th edition teaser article was about Necrons, I dug mine out.  My son has a proper Necron army, but these guys are mine.

A couple of these bases are resin casts, but it's so hard to tell which, it doesn't matter.

Ultramarine Rogue Trader Bikes and 2nd Edition Predator Annihilator

The Ultramarines have been getting a big boost lately as I've managed to finish a nice assortment of models that have been half-done or not done for ages. 

The Heavy Bike has been done for a long time, but it was pretty lonely (and vulnerable) so now it's got five pals.

This might be my favorite tank now. I rotated the top-piece (requiring a bit of stressful chopping up of the tank underneath) so the turret sits at the back of the tank rather than the front. While certainly less practical, the look references the original Predator model. 

We Ride!

Since I just bought Astra Militarum, I decided I'd work on my Rogue Trader Ultramarine army.

After years of rattling around in my bits box, I decided it's really time to build and paint this bike squad. The old "Vincent Black Shadow" bike minis are pretty cool. In fact, they are my favorite of all the Space Marine bike designs, despite being the smallest by far. 

Due to a shortage of right arms, two of these bikers are holding bolters. One of them, the sarge, isn't even holding the handlebars (he's that good.)

Vanguard Vets Double Trouble

Both of these squads, if played as outfitted, are stupid expensive point-wise.  Do I care? Not so much. Look how cool they turned out!

Servitors from Ebay

I already had one Rogue Trader servitor, but all my others are 2nd-3rd edition pewter models. They are fine models, and they don't look too out of place with my Rogue Trader Ultramarines, but they didn't fit perfectly.  I've been wanting some more of the RT servitors, but the prices I'd seen on eBay were too high given that I already had plenty of perfectly good Servitors. Then these guys appeared...

The New Mechanics (Coming Soon)

Now that I've bought them, I'm actually quite excited. I've shied away from using Techmarines with my Ultramarines because the Servitors don't match the army. Once painted (though they look ok now) I'll be in a hurry to get them onto a battlefield with the rest of my beakies..

In the Grim Darkness of the Far Future There's Only...

...Terraced Landscaping!

The first two, with a Space Marine to show scale.

They turned out so well, I made two more. Easy!

I found a pile of 1/2" Styrofoam sheets behind the local Rite-Aid, and snatched it up. I used my band saw to cut the sheet into these shapes, with a 45 degree bevel, glued them together, painted, and flocked.  I may paint the rock-surface as I prefer a darker look than this bright tan, but otherwise couldn't be more pleased.  The effort-to-reward ratio with these hills couldn't be better.  

Update: Decided to paint the surface of the hills. I'm glad I did. They'll need more touch-up now (easy drybrushing) but a layer of black tempura makes them look much more war-torn. Also hides several of my mistakes.

Generations

My new shiny Warhammer 40k book arrived today. Oh, happy day!

I like how it compares with the original Rogue Trader book.  It is, of course, much larger (yet strangely, contains fewer actual rules.)

Rock and Roll

These are just painted foam, but they turned out great and I'm proud of them.  Five terrain-type rock impassible terrain obstacles, and six objective sized rocks, of assorted colors.
